We just admire your beautiful garden and you amazing plant choice
personally i prefer this gardening style and i hope that my garden one day will look something like your garden!

can you tell us how big is your garden (in square meters (here we use metric system ) ) and what you do with tender (tropical and subtropical plants) plants during winter period..

once again compliments for your garden, i can just imagine how beautiful is to walk around in it

Thanks for your very kind comments. My garden is not that good and, of course, I only take photographs of the good bits! I'm quite a lazy gardener.

The garden is approximately 300 square meters, although I have never measured it. I live in the Southeast of England quite close to the sea so the winter temperatures are not so cold. However, it has been below freezing for the past few nights.

Many of the plants, including Tree Ferns, will survive outside through the winter. Some just need a covering of fleece or fern leaves. The banana, Musa Sikkimensis, also has to survive outside, I wrap the stems in fleece but this has not worked for the past 2 cold winters, luckily the plant regrows from its roots. I have a small plasic greenhouse that I put up just for winter, in this I put the Ensetes (bananas), Colocasias, Aeoniums etc. However this is not always succesful and I find Colocasias will surive left in the open.

I live in Macedonia (small country in south of Serbia and north of Greece), in the northwestern part in small town called Tetovo but here on this site we speak on serbo-croatian language
i can tell you that this is indeed very nice plant forum, real treasure of knowledge regarding plants and their care. the topics usually have the Latin name of the plants so if you like you can ask or share something from your gardening experience (you are our first member from England )

The very best gardening advice comes from sharing stories and experiences with other gardeners and because of that possibility this forum is perfect.

I saw your garden on flickr and I had to open this topic, "Garden in the shade" to show others different possibilities of planting in these conditions. This is also an inspiration to us.

I was commented Your succulents (aeonium, echeverias...), do You put them out of garden over winter ? Also, Your brugmansia is beautiful, how old is it ? I hope that You put it inside over winter, too?
We talked, also, about english gardens and wooden walls around them. Very good and nice solution for saving privacy.

I was intrigued by the numbers of visitors to my Flickr photographs from this website which is why I found this site.
I've found that it is possible to grow tropical or exotic plants here in England and to mix them with more hardy plants like ferns etc.
Wooden walls? Yes, the English are quite private people! For instance, my garden at the front of the house is just grass but I like to be in the garden at the back of the house in privacy.
I know very little about where you live. I think it has mountains, cold winters and hot summers? I know Greece and Turkey and think the climate is similar but with colder winters.
I can't easily find my way round this website because of my language problem - but will try.
I would be interested to know what plants you can grow in your countries.

Hi, emagen. Want to welcome you to this forum. Climate here is continental, mediterenian in coastal region of Croatia and Montenegro, and there u can breed some tropical plants outdoor. As u have noticed in Turkey they grow bananas outside which is impossible in our climate. Well, there are some hybrids u can.

Are u interested in trees, perenials, shrubs, ferns that live in this climate?
Are u maybe considering it in moving here?
Saw that Rodhodendron ponticum is quite a problem in your country, spreeding like crazy and considered a weed. Here, it is really difficult to grow due to its requerement of acidic soil, and can be grown only in pots. And can withstand tempratures here without any kind of protection during winter.

Our country has mixed climate. In Vojvodina plaines is typical continental. Warm, sommers. Cold winters with little snow. And our mountain region has different climate. More snow during winter. Not so hot summers etc.
